CHAPTER 10

NOAH

Everything shattered the night Marco's goons dragged me before their enraged boss, his eyes promising murder.

"Been having fun playing me for a fool, Noah?" Marco prowled closer where I knelt trembling between the bruising grips on my arms. "Did you really think I wouldn't sniff out your little scheme?"

I shook my head frantically. "Marco, no, you got it wrong—"

His vicious backhand cut off my words, head snapping to the side. "Save it! I know you've been feeding intel to the cops. But you forgot one thing." Marco fisted a hand in my hair, wrenching my gaze up to his venomous sneer. "I own you. And rats need to be exterminated."

I saw my death in his cold eyes. But oddly, my thoughts weren't of myself. I prayed Sam had escaped safely, that Marco didn't have people targeting him too. As long as he survived this nightmare, my fate didn't matter.

Marco must have read the defiance in my face. His lip curled cruelly. "Relax, your boyfriend's fine...for now. Once I deal with you, he's next. Unless..." His calculating look turned my blood to ice. "You can beg real nice, convince me to let you both live. On your knees where you belong."

His goons started to force me down, but I wrenched free with sudden violence, chest heaving. "Never again!" I hissed. "Do what you want to me, but Sam is untouchable. You don't own either of us anymore."

Marco's expression darkened to something murderous. He opened his mouth, lips forming the order to end my worthless life. But his words were drowned out by the shattering of glass and splintering of wood as the warehouse door exploded inward.

For a split second the room froze, suspended between heartbeats. Then total chaos erupted. Sam led the SWAT team in a tidal wave, their heavy boots pounding across the concrete floor. Marco's goons fumbled for their weapons but were instantly forced to their knees by the circle of automatics leveled unwaveringly at their heads.

"Hands up! Get down, now!" The SWAT leader's amplified commands rebounded through the cavernous space. The disoriented criminals had no choice but to obey as they were swiftly overwhelmed.

Only Marco himself remained standing, though his swagger had evaporated. Jaw clenched, he backed away slowly, primal instincts searching for an escape even as guns tracked his every movement. There was none. His kingdom was collapsing around him.

In the tumult, Sam's gaze found mine across the room. I saw my own harrowing emotions reflected in his eyes—relief, residual panic, the desperate need to reassure ourselves that we had somehow survived this crucible.

The moment stretched taut, the cacophony around us fading. But before we could move, Marco's focus snapped to me as well, his expression promising murder. He grabbed for the gun at his waistband.

My warning shout was lost in the eruption of sound as half the SWAT team opened fire. Marco's body jerked grotesquely under the onslaught before crumpling to the cold concrete, howling in rage and pain. Crimson spread out from him, seeping deep into the thirsty floor.
